Rock of Ages is a rock/ jukebox musical, with a book by Chris D’Arienzo, which has been composed around the classical rock hits from the 1980’s.It features songs from Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Styx, Steve Perry, Pat Benatar, Journey, Asia and Poison. The list does not end here; there are other popular rock bands that have been playing their part in making this musical successful. It has been choreographed by Kelly Devine, directed by Kristin Hanggi.Arrangements, music and orchestrations are done under the supervision of Ethan Popp.This show is popular for being comic and the whole performance seems to be extremely lighthearted. It is evident from the fact that during performances it is quite often seen that the actors seem to forget the fact that they are performing on stage and start interacting with the audience, thereby making the whole environment very relaxing and pleasant.

The story starts with narrator Lonny who tells the audience that it is set in the late 1980’s.It is primarily about a boy named Drew Bowie who in want of becoming a rock star has to face a lot of hardships. He starts working as a busboy in The Bourbon Room which is a Hollywood bar and is owned by Dennis Dupree. Then one day a girl named Sherrie arrives in the bar and we are shown that Drew falls for her instantly. After getting acquainted with Drew and getting to know about his life Sherrie compels and encourages him to fulfill his dreams and tells him that in order to do so, he will have to do something with his life.

Then we are introduced to Franz and his father Hertz who are by profession city developers .They are successful in convincing the mayor to demolish the Bourbon Room in order to change the life style of the area. Here we come across Regina who is the mayor’s city planner and against any demolitions. Dennis in the meanwhile is planning to get rock star Stacee Jaxx, play in his bar with his band Arsenal to earn some money before the place is destroyed forever. When Sherrie realizes that she is only a friend for Drew she is very upset and falls for Stacee when he arrives to give an interview in her bar. On the other hand Drew is selected by Stacee to open the show for him. Before the show began on Stacee’s request Sherrie is fired from the bar. Depressed she ends up working for a nearby club whose owner is Justice.

As the story advances we see that Stacee is punched by Sherrie when he comes to see her dance in the club and ends up misbehaving with her. Regina is still protesting but has not been successful so far. She tries to convince Frantz to stand for what he believed and he confesses her love for her and also that he had a dream of opening a confectioners store in his home country, Germany. When he tells about his dream to his father Hertz he suddenly feels for his son and decides to invest in his business and does not demolish Bourbon Room. In the end we see that both Sherrie and Drew confess their love for each other but Drew was not able to become a rock star.Fantz opens his store in Germany and both Drew and Sherrie move to Glendale. In the end Lonny makes the audience realize that at times your dreams don’t come true but whatever you get in the end is equally precious.

Rock of Ages with its heart moving performance has been appreciated by both the audience as well as the critics. It has been nominated and has also won many prestigious awards. In 2009 it won the TAPA’s Audience Choice Award for the best production. On first July 2009, the name was added in the Guinness book of World Record for the largest Air Guitar Ensemble. It was nominated for five Tony Awards and The Boulevard Magazine featured Rock of Ages as the cover of their magazine.
