Miss Saigon is the brainchild of acclaimed director and composer Claude-Michel Schonberg and he got the main idea from the famous opera of Giacomo Puccini called
Madame Butterfly. The lyrics have been written by Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr. Miss Saigon proved to be the second superb effort by Boublil and Schonberg after Les Miserables. The play was opened for theater audience at West End in 1989 in London city at the Theater Royal located on Drury Lane. At this venue, Miss Saigon kept on running till 1999 and closed after an amazing 4264 performances. Its Broadway Debut was in 1991 and continued there for 4092 performances. Currently, the musical is ranked at #10 in Broadway Theater history on its list of longest-running Broadway musical.
This two-act play tells a moving story about the delicate and lovely romance between a Vietnamese bar girl and an American GI. The story is set in the city of Saigon in Vietnam and it has a 70’s backdrop. The cast consists of Kim (a seventeen year girl who plays the main role and is forced to work as a bar girl), Christopher Scott (he is an American sergeant who will soon be going back to the US from Vietnam), The Engineer (he is the bar owner who hires Kim at his bar), John Thomas (Scott’s friend), Ellen (Scott’s wife back in the US), Gigi Van Tranh (a mean stripper lady who lives in the city of Saigon).
