About Cirque du Soleil Dralion


This unique circus is directed by Guy Caron, who claims to have been inspired by the Eastern philosophies, especially their aspect of oneness with the nature. The quote from Caron “I like a show that’s full of energy, without gaps, that’s full of strong acts, funny, with a big punch at the end.” explains his work ethics and preferences. Set in the backdrop of what seems to be a futuristic Chinese temple or medieval armor, the show showcases the talents of 50 world-renowned artists, with 5 to 6 performers playing the lead characters. Dralion uses around 1500 pieces of wardrobe, with some artists changing their costumes four times in a single act. The costume designer Francois Barbeau says that he was inspired by clothing from Africa, China and India and that he kept the costumes in vibrant colors, to add to the show’s vitality. Keeping with the show’s theme, the music by Violaine Corradi is a fusion of the East and the West, using both the electric and acoustic instruments like guitar, keyboards, winds, violin, drums and percussion instructions. The music betrays shades of Indian melodies, with sounds from Africa, Europe, and Andalusia.

The main cast of Dralion consists of Little Buddha: who is a chosen child with extra ordinary powers, however, he himself would prefer to be an everyday child. Clowns: just like in any other circus, they form an integral part of this circus as well. Dralions: are mythical characters. They are inspired by the imagery of dragon and the Chinese lion dances. L’Ame Force: are the vocalists of the show, symbolizing harmony between fire, water, earth and air (four elements). They sing lyrics in a language of their own. Yao: dressed in red, he is the god of fire, possessing both the power to do good as well evil. Oceane: dressed in green, she is the sensual goddess of water. Gaya: dressed in ochre, she is the goddess of earth. Azala: dressed in blue, she is the goddess of air, guardian of immortality and keeper of the sun. 

Cirque du Soleil has been credit with numerous awards for its masterful display of circus talents from all over the world. It has won a Bambi Award, Drama Desk Awards, a Rose d’Or, three Gemini Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and with a star on the infamous Hollywood Walk of Fame.
