The Addams Family

When the American cartoonist Charles Addams first published his cartoon characters in The New Yorker, little did he know that they would turn into a worldwide success. With a history of almost 72 years, these fictional characters commonly known as the Addams Family have been a part of many generations. After creating a sensation with the comic scripts, the cartoon was adapted for television screen in 1964. It featured the famous Addams Family theme song that stirred the fans everywhere and is still hummed by many. Following the success of the series, the filmmakers decided to branch out on the experience and presented the world with “The Addams Family” movie. It was one of the biggest hits of 1991 and on public demands its sequel “Adams Family Values” followed in 1993. The fans couldn’t get enough of this macabre demonic and totally bizarre “ideal American family”. Addams Family has been a hit on various platforms, be it television, big screen, books or even video games. To the fans delight these enchanting characters were once again brought to life in March 2010 through the classic, Addams Family Musical. Penned by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the stage adaptation presents the family at its best: totally inappropriate and hilarious!

While the television series and movies followed their own storylines, the musical is solely based on the characters as they were presented in the cartoons. The show features the beloved characters Gomez Addams. Morticia Addams, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, Wedesday Addams, Pugsley Addams, Lurch, Mal Beineke, Alice Beineke and Lucas Beineke. When Charles Addams developed these cartoon characters he made them appear as sweet, charming, captivating as well as completely eerie and weird. The writers have effectively incorporated those traits to make Addams Family a humorous and enthralling stage musical.

It features the original story that presents a family with an affinity for all things macabre. Based on a simple yet entertaining plot, the audiences are taken on a fun adventure when the young Wednesday Addams breaks the news that she’s in love with Lucas Beineke. For Gomez and Morticia Addams it’s their worst nightmare coming true as they have to take a step forward in accepting that their little girl has grown up. The highlight of the show is when the Beineke family is invited for dinner and how this “gathering” turns the Addams house upside down.

When the curtain rises the entire Addams family is at the graveyard paying respects to the dead and the audiences are treated to the track “When You’re an Addams”. Through Uncle Fester’s dialogue with the Ancestors it’s learnt that the family is upset by Wednesday’s admission of being in love. While Wednesday has invited the boyfriend and his parents for dinner, she is nervous about the impression her bizarre family will make. Though Gomez and Morticia didn’t disappoint, Lucas’s parents turn out to be far more uptight. Through some wonderful scene transitions, the crowd is treated to interesting events like Wednesday appearing in a yellow dress after wearing black for eighteen years and Mrs. Beineke spouting random poetry. Grandmama and Pugsley fail to act normal, while the latter is worried that Wednesday’s love-life will change things between them. Amidst a lot of drama it’s revealed that Lucas and Wednesday actually want to get married and when the families protest, they decide to run away.

The second half consists of confrontations, revelations and a lot of music. All the actors have performed beautifully and keep the audiences completely engaged. The creative team has done a wonderful job with the set and every detail has been looked into. Everything from costumes to lighting to special effects is splendid and enhances the performances. From the very first scene the audiences are made aware that something very special is about to follow. The most impressive part is in the beginning when the boy’s family is looking for the Addams residence. The house is hidden at the back of the stage behind swaying trees and swirls of fog when suddenly with a tremendous clap it all disappears and the Addams Family comes in view. Immediately following the loud clap, the iconic Addams Family theme starts and the family, arms crossed over their chest, snap their fingers. The entire scene creates an amazing impact and prepares the audiences for an extraordinary journey.

Addams Family will soon be creating its magic in your city and if you don’t want to miss the marvelous show, then get your Addams Family Tickets now! It’ll be a lifetime experience.
