About In The Heights

 
In the Heights is a 2 Act musical that is based on a book written by well known American playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes. The original idea, as well as lyrics and music is done by famous actor, composer, rapper and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda. It was Miranda who wrote the initial draft for In the Heights while he was a college student in 1999. Wesleyan University agreed to stage the performance of In the Heights and for this Miranda added some more salsa and rap numbers to make it more colorful and melodious. Two theater personalities saw the play and immediately got in touch with Miranda with a proposal to produce this play for Broadway. Initially it started as an OF Broadway production that ran in 2007 for almost six months at the 37 Arts Theater. The choreography for this production was done by Andy Blankenbuehler and it was directed by Thomas Kail. Since then the play has been staged in a number of cities across the US as well as in Philippines and soon it will be staged in Brazil.
 
The Broadway debut of In the Heights was in 2008 at the Richard Rogers Theater. This time again it was directed and choreographed by Kail and Blankenbuehler respectively. Orchestration was done by Bill Sherman Alex Lacamoire. The cast included Miranda as Usnavi, Seth Stewart as Graffiti Pete, Olga Meridiz as Abuela Claudia, Andrea Burns as Daniela, Christopher Jackson as Benny and Priscilla Lopez as Camila. The musical literally won the hearts of fans all over the country and the earnings were in millions. It was praised by not just the audience but also the critics and received 9 Drama Desk and an astounding 13 Tony Award nominations. In the Heights managed to win 2 Drama Desk and four Tony Awards including Best Musical, Outstanding Ensemble Performance, Outstanding Choreography, Best Original Score and Best Orchestration. It also won a Grammy Award in category of Best Musical Show Album.
 
Some of the hit numbers included in this musical are “It Won’t Be Long Now”, “When You’re Home”, “The Club”, “Hundred of Stories”, “Carnaval del Bario”, “Everything I Know”, “In The Heights” and “No Me Diga”. The musical received favorable reviews from different critics and popular newspapers. New York Times termed it as a musical that is full of joy and with so much energy that it can light up the George Washington Bridge one or two years. One of the critics wrote that he struggled to understand the Spanish lyrics but it still kept me engrossed with its excellent choreography and amazing set. One of the critics termed it as an uncalculated charmer due to its dynamic score, witty lyrics and colorful opulence.
