St. Petersburg is situated in Pinellas County, one of the four counties making up the Tampa Bay Area. The other counties include Hillsborough, Hernando & Pasco. The Tampa Bay Area is Florida's second most populous metropolitan area, home to large economic centers such as Clearwater, Tampa & St. Petersburg. The extent of the team's fan base came under the spotlight during the renaming of the team in 2008, when franchise president Matt Silverman coined the theme "We Are One Team" to show the unity of the residents of different localities of the Tampa Bay Area behind the St. Petersburg franchise. The Rays play their home games in Tropicana Field, the only non-retractable domed stadium in MLB. The stadium is also famous for being the only to host full seasons of football, arena football, hockey & baseball on its turf. Finished in 1990 as the Florida Suncoast Dome to initially attract the Chicago White Sox franchise which was on the lookout for a new venue, the Tropicana Field boasts an impressive capacity of 43,772. The slanting roof & the enormous exterior ceramic tile mosaic make it a picturesque location.

Stuart Sternberg, the famous Wall Street investor, is the majority owner of the Tampa Bay Rays. His astute decision-making, especially in the light of the team's dismal showing until 2007, have won him acclaim as an administrator. Andrew Friedman is the Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, a post that allows him to take over General Managerial duties. The Rays' manager, Joe Maddon, completes the selection panel, in charge of masterminding the team's rise to prominence in the 2008 season. Starting off as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 1998 season under star manager Larry Rothschild, the franchise acquired the likes of Wade Boggs & Fred McGriff to launch an early assault on the top teams. The attack never materialized, as the famous "Hit Show" of McGriff, Canseco, Castilla & Vaughn only proved they were way past their prime. 2002 proved the worst season under the incapable managerial command of Hal McRae. 2004 became prominent for the continued development of Rocco Baldelli & Carl Crawford, & the acquisition of excellent pitcher Scott Kazmir. The young guns lit the way to a successful 2007 season, & with the renaming & uniform-change successfully done, all eyes were trained towards 2008. The Rays held the MLB's best record at the 1/3 point of the season on Memorial Day. The brilliance of Longoria & Pena was relentless, & a slip-up by the Red Sox saw them clinch the East Division for the first time. In the ALDS, they dispatched the White Sox in four games, & set up a nail-biting encounter against rivals Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series. Going down to the wire, the Rays emerged as AL Champions from Game 7. The team then had to endure a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, but for Rays' fans, the season had been memorable nonetheless.

The Tampa Bay Rays have 1 division title to their name in 2008, the same year they went on to win the American League & held aloft the William Harridge trophy. Wade Boggs is the franchise's only Hall of Famer, & Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena both scooped up major awards in the triumphant season, including the Golden Glove & Silver Slugger awards.

The upturn in the Rays' fortunes amply demonstrates how proper backroom planning & concrete administrative decision making can do wonders for the team.
