About Nebraska Cornhuskers
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln sports circuit was introduced to the name "Cornhuskers" in 1893, when school newspapers made a reference to the football team's 20-18 upset victory over Iowa. Abandoning other nicknames like "Antelopes" & "Man-killing Mastodons", students started using the Cornhuskers name en masse. The University has nine training facilities on the City Campus, with one on the East Campus & the remaining off-campus. Football's Memorial Stadium, often nicknamed the "Sea of Red" due to the overwhelming amount of colorful apparel in support of the team, can host a staggering 81,067 boisterous fans. The record stands at 86,304 for a 2009 game. The Stadium has an intimidating presence, with the inscription above the main entrance reading: "Through these gates pass the greatest fans in college football." It is a tribute to the unwavering support, which has sold out seats for a record 48 consecutive years. The 4300-seater Nebraska Coliseum plays host to the much-storied volleyball & wrestling teams, and hosted the basketball team for fifty years before they shifted to the Bob Devaney Sports Center in 1976. The latter boasts of a 200-meter hydraulic banked track, one of only three in the country. Apart from basketball, gymnastics, indoor track & field and swimming & diving are sports the multi-purpose arena hosts. For outdoor track & field, the Ed Weir Track Stadium is present, while the Nebraska Soccer Field & Rifle Range host the respective teams. The state-of-the-art strength training & conditioning facilities have made Nebraska Cornhuskers a feared name.
Celebrated collegiate football head coach Tom Osborne is the current Athletics Director. Osborne has quite a legacy at the institution, coaching the Cornhuskers for 25 years & winning three national titles with them. The varsity teams have their own head coaches who oversee training & match strategies. Bo Pellini took over the reins as football head coach in 2007, with John Cook now serving his 10th year in charge of the exciting women's volleyball team. In basketball, Doc Sadler heads the men's team with Connie Yuri heading the women's. With top of the line facilities, great players are expected to be produced, & the Cornhuskers have not disappointed. They head the list of academic All-Americans with 271, over 50 ahead of their next closest rivals Notre Dame, underlining their dominance. Cornhuskers' football was national champion five times. Twice was this achieved in the Bob Devaney era (1970 & 1971), & thrice at the end of celebrated coach Tom Osborne's stint (1994, 95, 97). The last run saw them become the second team to win three titles in four years. With three championships (1995, 2000 & 2006) & three runner-up finishes, women's volleyball is one of the university's most successful sports. The remarkable record is bettered only by Stanford. Men's gymnastics have scooped up 8 national titles for the Cornhuskers, giving fans good value for their Nebraska Cornhuskers tickets.
