About Universoul Circus


Formed in the fabled city of Atlanta eighteen years ago, Universoul Circus has since then risen to the top despite being one of the youngest if not the youngest circus. Circuses like the Ringling Brothers have been around for over a hundred years. At present Universoul Circus performs an average of five-hundred shows in thirty two different destinations all over the world, aside from the US and Canada. Founded by Cedric Walker, Universoul Circus came into being in 1994. It was the result of a vision its founder had in which he wanted to explore other talents people had, aside from the more common dancers and singers. He was not only interested in Americans but also in people outside the US so as to create a show that had a wide range of talent and a diverse combination of performers. The founders then began by conducting research on African American entertainment from as long as a century ago. They then stumbled upon a circus owned by an African American that had been operating since 1893. Cedric Walker then came up with the idea of using hip hop musicals alongside animal acts and vaudeville.

Universoul Circus then began recruiting people from all the world and started training them. Despite some setbacks in the start, this spectacular circus was a tremendous hit and became a success. After that, it never looked back. In the first season only, Universoul Circus received positive reviews and had crowds flocking to see it. In only three years, Universoul Circus had become a circus that toured ten cities and two years later it changed to nineteen cities. In 1998, Universoul Circus was part of a HBO Special that received an Emmy Award nomination. By 2001, Universoul Circus was touring as far as South Africa and now goes to around thirty two cities of the world.

This ‘hip hop under the big top’, as envisioned by its creator, was an immediate hit as it provided a special flavor to the world of circuses. It mixed both the traditional with the modern to create a blend of performances that quickly stood out in the crowd as being something different. The first show of the circus was held in Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium. At present, the circus’s headquarters are also in the city of Atlanta and it has a staggering seventy five performers hailing from all around the world. There are twelve different acts that the performers perform. Some of the acts performed by the circus are Clowns, Trapeze, Break Dancing, Motorcycle Daredevils, Acrobats, Magical Illusions, Bicycle Daredevils, Dogs, Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Caribbean Limbo Dancers, Stilt Walkers, and much more. The ringmaster in this circus is Tony Tone.
