About Earth Wind and Fire
Chicago, Illinois based American funk and R&B band named Earth, Wind & Fire was formed in 1969. The band is often abbreviated as EWF and has been enjoying great popularity ever since its inception. The music produced by the band generally belongs to the genres of funk, rhythm and blues, jazz fusion, soul and rock music. The band has always been critically acclaimed, and has won many awards including four American Music Awards and six Grammy Awards. Owing to their commendable services towards music, the band has also been included in Vocal Group Hall of Fame as well as Rock n` Roll Hall of Fame. The band has also been rated at number 60 on 100 Greatest Artists of Rock N’ Roll list prepared by VH1 in 1998.
Earth, Wind & Fire was formed by Maurice White, who was working as a session drummer with Ramsey Lewis Trio and Chess Records in 1962. White thought of making his own group, and collaborated with Wayne T, Don Whitehead and Wade Flemons from Chicago to form a group named Salty Peppers. The newly formed band released a song that proved to be significantly successful, titled La La Time. Nevertheless, the band could not continue its streak of success any further, and its second release proved to be a flop. The band was reorganized, with Maurice White’s younger Verdine joined in along with Yackov Ben Israel and Sherry Scott. Soon, the band was signed to WB Records. The band’s name was inspired by elemental qualities of Maurice White’s astrological sign i.e. Sagittarius. There were some new additions to the band at that time after auditions in Los Angeles, including Chester Washington on reeds, Michael Beale as guitarist, trombonist Alex Thomas, Wade Flemons on vocals and electric piano and Leslie Drayton on trumpet. The complete band consisted of ten members.
The debut album released by the band was titled Earth, Wind, Fire in 1971, and turned out to be a success. Some of the tracks from the album reached top positions on international charts, providing the newly formed band a strong initial base and encouragement for their future endeavors. Subsequent albums by the band were also critically acclaimed and it wasn’t very late that the band established its reputation among the top of the line musical groups in the industry. Musical styles by Earth, Wind & Fire kept on changing with the passage of time, with being more of classical music at one point in time and later transforming into predominantly electronic music especially in early 1980s. All types of music by the band were popular and they have always enjoyed great figures in terms of attendance at their concerts. Their associated acts with other renowned artists have also been immensely popular, especially with bands like the Family Band, Outkast and Robert Randolph. In recent years, their popularity has been on a further rise, owing to some of the recent hits that they have produced.
Some of the important influences for Earth, Wind & Fire have been artists like D’Angelo, Point of Grace, Lenny White, The Manhattans, Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, Wynonna Judd, Chaka Khan, Donny Osmond, Musiq Soulchild and Herb Alpert. Their musical style is especially renowned for the typical sound of their horn section and the beautiful effect produced by the difference in vocals of Maurice White’s tenor and Philip Bailey’s falsetto. A specific feature of the band’s music is that an African thumb piano called kalimba is played in all of its songs.
